Introduction

In a polluted and stressed environment, herbs are a symbol of hope. Without damaging our world in any way, they provide us with medicines, foods and food flavourings, perfumes and other useful essential oils. If our living planet is to survive, with richness, diversity and dynamic balance, then we have to move quickly and radically to new ways of living. Herbs have their part to play in re-establishing a natural and sympathetic relationship between us and our environment.

This book explores the medicinal use of herbs. I believe that the majority of medical conditions currently treated by modern synthetic drugs, can be resolved using only herbs, or herbs combined with other natural therapies. This statement is based on years of experience, with my own health, that of my family and many patients. The herbal philosophy is one of preventing illness and enhancing health, as well as dealing with specific problems, when they arise. Following this approach, you will develop an increased sensitivity for how your body responds, both to stresses and to remedies. You will also develop a greater trust of your own intuition.

When we walk in the woods or fields, hidden amongst the varied array of green foliage is a magical treasure box of potent aids to our health. To recognise those plants and learn how to prepare and use them, is a relatively simple thing. The rewards for your effort and the sense of connection with these plant allies, gives great satisfaction.

By using herbs, growing and buying organic foods, cycling and walking and most of all by being in balance (happy), we increase the power and health of our own being, at the same time as revitalising the power and health of our environment. This is as it should be. Our own well-being is inextricably connected with that which surrounds us.
